The first day of October provides opportunities to recognize significant beginnings and endings in the life of Girl Scout founder Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low.
She was born on October 31, 1860, in Savannah, Georgia. Although Halloween overshadows her birthday, Girl Scouts from around the world will be acknowledging her milestone at the end of the month.
She died on January 17, 1927 from breast cancer. Given that October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, it is also a fitting time to remind folks to get screened. We can also recognize how far treatment and awareness has come in the nearly 100 years since she succumbed to the disease.
Daisy went to great lengths to keep her cancer a secret, so much so that it took many people by surprise when she passed away. One of the great ironies of her life was that, after a lifetime of suffering and heartbreak, cancer struck just as she and her movement were thriving. To those around her, she never seemed more “alive” and vibrant than in the years just prior to her death. She fought to do everything she could to advance her movement right up until her last breath.
So this month, let’s think about Juliette Low by celebrating her beginning as well as honoring her ending.
And schedule those mammograms!
