Today is my mom’s birthday. This is also the week that my book about the family behind the Girl Scouts was released, more than two months earlier than originally expected. But sometimes the universe aligns to provide a gift we didn’t know we needed. Having the book released just in time for Mom’s birthday was the perfect unexpected present, since she was my main inspiration for writing it. As I note in the Acknowledgements section:
This organization played a pivotal role in shaping my young life and inspiring my interest in her family’s story. The organization also shaped the life of my mother, Lynda Mills Langley, to whom this book is dedicated. Long before becoming the best Girl Scout leader I ever had, she inspired my love of books and always encouraged all my creative endeavors. Through the organization Juliette Low founded, I watched my mother grow in confidence and skills, from a woman who had little experience even camping to one who became an instructor of outdoor survival skills for other leaders. She has always been the secret behind any success I may have had in life.
Mom’s been having some health challenges of late, so celebrating this milestone birthday with her has been extra special. With the book release I get to share with the world how special she is. As always, she continues to inspire me every day.
Happy Birthday to my favorite Girl Scout!
